Car seized as 23-year-old man accused of driving 176 km/h

A man clocked at nearly twice the posted speed limit on the Bedford By-pass won’t be driving for at least a week. Police have his license and his car.

A 23-year-old was stopped Tuesday evening after officers say they saw him driving at 176 km/h in a 90 km/h zone.

RCMP Constable Tony Borovsky says speed kills, especially that kind of speed.

“Travelling at that speed, especially with the weather that we’ve been experiencing in the last few days,” says Cst. Borovsky, “no one can react quick enough at that speed.”

The charge is Stunting, which comes with an automatic vehicle seizure and license suspension for at least one week. Conviction brings a fine of more than $2400 and six points on the offender’s license.

The Motor Vehicle Act explanation of the charge is “any person who operates a motor vehicle on a highway in a race, in a contest, while performing a stunt or on a bet or wager is guilty of an offence.”
