Police urge caution after rash of crosswalk collisions

It’s been a dangerous couple of days for pedestrians on the road.

There have been four separate incidents of people being hit by cars while in cross walks in recent days and that has police reminding drivers and pedestrians to pay attention to their surroundings.

In two of the cases, the driver was ticketed for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk and in a third police determined the pedestrian didn’t give the vehicle a chance to stop before entering into the roadway.

The fourth incident is still under investigation.

cst. brian palmeter says the incidents show road safety is a shared responsibility.

“It shows it is a two-way street and that both pedestrians and motorists have a role to play in keeping the roads safe,” he said.

Police are reminding drivers to watch for people trying to cross the road and yield to anyone in a crosswalk. But he says pedestrians should always try to cross in crosswalks and use overhead signals where available.

Palmeter says pedestrians should bear in mind that although they have the right of way at crosswalks – it doesn’t guarantee a safe crossing.

“Ultimately, when somebody’s struck by a car, no matter who’s in the right, it’s a serious situation and can have lasting consequences,” he said.

Palmeter says it’s always a good idea for pedestrians to make eye contact with drivers before stepping onto the road.
