Curler Colleen Jones recovers from potentially deadly disease

Two-time world championship curler Colleen Jones is praising medical staff as she recovers from a bout of bacterial meningitis at the Halifax Infirmary.

She developed a severe headache and neck stiffness on Saturday and was rushed to hospital where she was quickly diagnosed with the potentially fatal condition.

Jones tells the Herald her doctors are pleased with her progress, though she may need surgery to repair the leak of cerebrospinal fluid that likely allowed the bacteria into her brain.

Meningitis is the inflammation of protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord.

It is fatal about 15 per cent of the time.
