Power rates to go up in January

The Utility and Review Board is granting a 5.66% residential increase to Nova Scotia Power rates effective January 1st, 2011, although that is roughly half of what it could have been.

The board sided with those who urged the UARB to defer the entire increase over a two year period.  Essentially, that means Nova Scotia Power will get its full increase of closer to 10%, it will just take longer to phase it in.

Bill Mahody of the Consumer Advocates Office says he’s pleased the board softened the blow for consumers.

“Certainly in this case, the board has provided a smoothing mechanism by deferring out what could have been a much more significant rate impact and that has benefits for ratepayers particularly in these current times,” he says.

Besides the 5.66 percent residential increase, commercial rates will jump 6.2 percent in the New Year and industrial customers will see their bills jump almost 7 percent.
