Government to publish names of public sector workers making more than $100K

Those with six-figure salaries who work in the public sector will have their names published in an online report if proposed legislation is passed.

Finance Minister Graham Steele says The Public Sector Compensation Disclosure Act will publish the names of workers at school boards, health authorities and government agencies who make more than $100 thousand a year.

Steele says this way, the taxpayers can decide for themselves if the pay is fair.

“If there is going to be a sensible conversation about public sector compensation, it has to start with disclosure of what that compensation is.  And that is what this bill will do,” he says.  “We’ll make sure there is disclosure of what compensation is paid and received in the public service sector.”

Manitoba, B-C and Ontario have similar legislation in place.  Manitoba and B-C report salaries over $75 thousand.  Steele says Nova Scotia has chosen to follow Ontario in setting the threshold $25 thousand higher than that.

“I think most people would agree that public interest is focussed on the upper end of the salary scale.  That is why we chose the salary threshold that we did,” he says.

The first mandatory report would be required online for the 2011-2012 fiscal year.  Steele says the list will be audited before being posted.
