Sun shines, floodwaters recede across Nova Scotia

After a week of record rainfall in Nova Scotia, sunshine is in the forecast for the weekend and into early next week.

That’s especially good news for residents in the southwestern corner, where flooding washed out roads and bridges and forced about 200 families from their homes.

Water levels are now receding in many rain-soaked areas.

The state of emergency has been lifted in Quinan in Argyle and four families returned to their homes near Carleton Dam.

About 20 families in the Raynardton area below the Tusket Dam are still out of their homes.

Many others are displaced because of flood waters, and Barrington and Yarmouth remain under a local state of emergency.

All dams are being monitored because of high water levels.

Premier Darrell Dexter, who inspected the flood damage by helicopter on Wednesday, said that his government will seek disaster relief funding from Ottawa.
