Crossing guards want big fines for school-zone speeders

The union representing crossing guards in HRM is warning drivers to slow down in school zones.

In a release, CUPE spokesperson Glenna Casavechia says guards are seeing way too many drivers speeding, sometimes through crosswalks.

She says they’re quite often chatting on their cell phones as well.

Casavechia says Lacewood Drive and Caldwell Road are two of the worst places for trying to get kids across the street safely.

The union has asked for a meeting with Transportation Minister Bill Estabrooks to discuss the problem.

Casavechia says the guards want to see stiffer penalties for speeders, with fines of up to $1,000 for anyone caught speeding in a school zone.
