Georges Bank moratorium to be extended by three years: Dexter

Premier Darrell Dexter has announced the moratorium on offshore oil and gas exploration on the Georges Bank will be renewed for three years, expiring on Dec. 31, 2015.

The moratorium was set to expire in 2012 and a decision on renewing or lifting it was due by June 1.

Last week, Dexter said the decision would be made sooner because of public concern following the disastrous oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Environmental advocates and fishers say the $200 million fishery is too valuable to risk a similar disaster.

The moratorium has been in place since 1988.
