Special blood clinic planned to honour fallen Mountie

RCMP and Canadian Blood Services are holding a special blood donor clinic in honour of the Nova Scotia-based officer who died in the Haiti earthquake.

Mark Gallagher left Halifax in July 2009 to help train Haitian police officers as part of a U.N. mission.

He was the public relations officer for the Mounties in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick for two years before that.

A release from the RCMP says he took the same “good-natured, selflessness and compassionate approach to the tasks” in Haiti as he had to every other duty during his career, and the clinic will honour both his memory and his humanity.

The clinic will be held at the Halifax Military Community Centre next Friday from 9 a.m. to noon.
