South Shore school board wants Canada Winter Games break

The South Shore Regional School Board isn’t happy that Halifax-area students will get an extended winter break next year – but no one else will.

Schools in metro will shut down for two weeks in February during the 2011 Canada Winter Games – but at other schools across the province, March break will be just one week, as usual.

The South Shore board has agreed to write to the education minister to protest the decision. Spokesman Rick Hyde tells the Herald, every student should have a chance to attend or volunteer at the winter games – and with Halifax only an hour away from Bridgewater, many students in his district have the chance to participate.

A spokesman for the department of education says the minister had to consider the impact of a two-week break on families and felt this was the best solution.
