Toyota suspends sales, halts production of recalled vehicles

Toyota is suspending sales and halting production of several of its vehicles, after recalling millions in North America for sticking accelerator pedals.

Eight Toyota models are affected, including three made in southwestern Ontario.  They’re the same vehicles recalled last week.

The recall affects the following vehicles:

– 2009-2010 Corolla
– 2007-2010 Camry
– 2009-2010 RAV-4
– 2009-2010 Matrix
– 2005-2010 Avalon
– 2010 Highlander
– 2007-2010 Tundra
– 2008-2010 Sequoia

It’s estimated 270,000 vehicles in Canada and 2.3 million in the U.S. are affected.

Toyota announced late Tuesday that it was taking the additional step of suspending sales of these models’ new vehicles, and halting production at five North American manufacturing facilities for the week of February 1.

Toyota dealers have been told it’s unknown how long the Japanese automaker would suspend production of the vehicles.  Toyota refused to speculate on the length of the stoppages.

Toyota is the world’s number one automaker, and some of the models affected are immensely popular.  This issue is expected to affect Toyota’s bottom line, unless a fix is found soon.
