Body of fallen RCMP officer to return to N.B. hometown

The body of RCMP Sgt. Mark Gallagher will return to his home province today.

Gallagher, the former media spokesman for the RCMP in Nova Scotia, died in the earthquake that devastated Haiti on Jan. 12.

A ramp ceremony will be held at the Greater Moncton International Airport this afternoon before a motorcade will carry Gallagher’s remains to his hometown of Woodstock, N.B.

Gallagher’s widow Lisa will be on hand for the ramp ceremony, as will many of his friends and colleagues.

She tells CTV that her husband had a knack for striking up friendhips.

“He had the idea that strangers were only friends that you hadn’t met yet,” she said. “And he had time for people, he had time for everyone.”

RCMP say people can pay their respects by gathering on overpasses that cross the Trans-Canada Highway between Moncton and Woodstock.

A full regimental funeral will be held on Thursday at St. Gertrude’s Roman Catholic Church in Woodstock.
