Glimmers of hope in Haiti

A week after that devastating earthquake shattered Haiti’s capital, help is getting through the debris and devastation to those who need it.

There are some signs that order is beginning to win over chaos.  Haitians lined up orderly, Tuesday, to receive food and water — including hot rice and beans served in white Styrofoam containers.  Some medical supplies are getting through, but not enough for everyone.

Some doctors have to perform amputations without anaesthetic.

Doctors Without Borders says one of its planes has been turned away from the Port-au-Prince airport three times since Sunday.  This, despite the number of flights landing is about six times higher than before the quake.

U.S. Air Force Major General Brooks Bash says his command has delivered a lot of supplies and personnel.

“16,000 tons of cargo have been delivered, and over 2400 people,” Maj. Gen. Bash said.

There was a rescue that’s being called a miracle, Tuesday.  A 69-year-old Haitian woman was pulled from the rubble of a Roman Catholic compound.  In Creole, she told reporters she spent the whole week praying.

Rescuers are hoping to find more survivors, but admit that they’re racing against time and dehydration.
