Nova Scotian killed in Afghanistan returns home

A Canadian soldier from Nova Scotia is making his final journey home.

Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean will be among the mourners on hand when the bodies of five Canadians killed in Afghanistan arrive home today.

A plane carrying the bodies of four Canadian soldiers and a Calgary journalist is due to arrive at CFB Trenton in eastern Ontario.

Among those killed killed Wednesday in a roadside bombing outside Kandarhar city was 28 year old Sergeant Kirk Taylor from Yarmouth, NS.

The others are 28 year old Sergeant George Miok 21 year old Corporal Zachery McCormack, 21 year old Private Garrett Chidley, and Calgary Herald reporter Michelle Lang.

Lang, who was on assignment in Kandahar for Canwest News Service, is the first Canadian journalist to be killed while covering the Afghan mission.

Defence Minister Peter MacKay and Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Walt Natynczyk will also be in Trenton.

In all, 138 Canadian soldiers and two civilians have died as part of Canada’s eight-year mission in Afghanistan.
