HRP officer facing extortion charge

Halifax Regional Police have charged one of their own with extortion following an investigation this week.

Const. Brian Palmeter says two front-line police officers came forward on Thursday with information about misconduct involving another police officer.

“Information was obtained by our officers Thursday evening which alleged the officer extorted money from a person whom he came into contact with in the course of our duties earlier that day,” he said. “As a result of the subsequent investigation, the officer was arrested at 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12, while he was on duty and then was charged early Sunday morning.”

Const. Jeffrey Buchanan, who has been an officer for more than four years has been released on bail and will return to court on Jan. 26 to face charges of extortion and breach of trust.

Palmeter says it’s a difficult situation for the force that’s being taken very seriously.

“Police officers are expected to be beyond reproach,” he said. “Anything less cannot and will not be tolerated by this department.”

Palmeter says the investigation is ongoing and more charges are expected.
