HALIFAX – The Rouyn-Noranda Huskies defeat the Halifax Mooseheads 6-5 in triple overtime to take a 3-2 lead in their opening round playoff series.

Huskies’ Gabriel Fontaine scored the game winning goal 26 seconds into the sixth period.

“It’s probably the worst feeling ever,” said Mooseheads forward Maxime Fortier who recorded a hat-trick against the Huskies.

Halifax got off to a great start in the first period, giving up only one goal, while Maxime Fortier netted a pair to give the Mooseheads a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes.

The Huskies managed to score twice and take a 3-2 lead near the midway point of the second, but Nico Hischier responded, tying things up near the end of the period.

Halifax came back in the third period, with Joel Bishop scoring on a power play and Fortier completing the hat-trick to give Halifax to a 5-3 lead.

Jeremy Lauzon and Matheiu Boucher responded for the Huskies, forcing a first overtime period where neither team were able to score the game winner.

The scoreless drought continued throughout the second overtime period, forcing a third where the Huskies scored 26 seconds in to take the 6-5 win.

“Against a team like that we need to learn how to close to close the game,” said Fortier. “We didn’t get out-played.”

On Monday, the Herd heads back to Rouyn-Noranda for game six.
