Marianas Trench nab leading seven MMVA noms; Drake, Hedley get five each

TORONTO – There will be more Marianas Trench at this year’s MuchMusic Video Awards as the Vancouver pop outfit nabbed a leading seven nominations Tuesday for this year’s bash.

The band has made memorable entrances at the award show before, arriving on the red carpet last year encased in clear plastic hamster balls and striding in back in 2009 after an introduction from a marching band.

Toronto rapper Drake and Hedley from Abbotsford, B.C., are next with five nominations apiece, while breakout pop singer Carly Rae Jepsen of Mission, B.C., and energetic Toronto rap-rock outfit Down With Webster took four nominations each.

Other multiple nominees include Justin Bieber, City and Colour, Simple Plan and Danny Fernandes.

The show will be co-hosted by outrageous L.A. party-dance duo LMFAO, who also nabbed a pair of nominations. That group and California pop star Katy Perry — also a double nominee — are the only confirmed performers for the show thus far.

The MMVAs will be held June 17 outside MuchMusic headquarters in downtown Toronto.

For video of the year, Jepsen’s ubiquitous hit “Call Me Maybe” will face off against Drake’s “Headlines,” Hedley’s “Invincible,” Marianas Trench’s “Fallout” and Down With Webster’s “She’s Dope.”

Jepsen’s infectious tune is also up for the fan-voted “UR Fave” video award, where it will face off against some familiar foes including the same tunes by Drake, Hedley and Marianas Trench, along with Simple Plan’s “Summer Paradise.”

Other Canadian acts nominated include Arcade Fire, K’naan, Nelly Furtado and Nickelback.
