North End of Halifax flourishing with new business

There has been a sudden surge of business in the North End of Halifax, which some say could cause locals to be pushed out of the community.

North End Business Association Executive Director David Flemming says the transformation into a trendy new hub could cause the cost of living to skyrocket.

“I think the bigger issue that happens in this area isn’t neccesarily the cost of things that’s going up out of whack, it’s the fact that peoples’ incomes aren’t going up with it,” explained Flemming.

He said the cost of houses and commercial space was relatively stagnant for a while.

“For the longest time, the North End was considered by most people to be relatively under priced,” said Flemming. “It had some reputation issues, I guess one would say.”

Flemming added businesses are starting to invest in the North End more and more because they see a growing district with a lot of potential.
