Georgia power plant explosion under investigation northwest of Atlanta; no one seriously hurt

EUHARLEE, Ga. – Utility officials say no one has been seriously hurt in an explosion at a coal-fired power plant northwest of Atlanta.

The chairman of Georgia’s Public Service Commission, Chuck Eaton, said an apparent explosion struck Unit 2 at Plant Bowen on Thursday afternoon.

Georgia Power officials briefed Eaton on what happened. He says there were reports of people suffering bumps and bruises.

Eaton says the plant was shut down for maintenance at the time of the explosion. The cause of the blast was not immediately clear.

Plant Bowen is located in Euharlee, about 50 miles northwest of downtown Atlanta.
