“Record weekend” for downtown bar owners

St Patrick’s Day falling on a Sunday was no problem for Halifax bar owners.

In fact as the green foam settles today, we’re finding out it was a record weekend for business.

Durty Nelly’s owner Joe McGuinness didn’t want to get into numbers but he explained why it was one of the most profitable St Patrick’s Day weekend for bars ever.

“People decided to come out and start the celebrations on Saturday and we noticed a substantial increase in business Saturday afternoon and into the evening,” he said.

He added there were other factors as well.

“There were a lot of people out, the weather was good, it was a little chilly but there wasn’t a cloud in the sky and people were really getting caught up in the festivities,” he said. “On Saturday morning we also had a fantastic St Patrick’s Day parade.”

Along with other bars like The Old Triangle, the doors opened early Sunday morning at Durty Nelly’s which had more people trading green for green beer.

Even with a full weekend of St Patrick’s Day, McGuinness was happy to see most people were pretty well behaved.

“We hate to see irresponsible individuals not behaving themselves and I have to say there was very little of that yesterday and Saturday so that was great to see,” he said.

It’s a similar story from police who said Sunday was no worse than a Friday or Saturday night.
