Sleeman brewery in Dartmouth is up for sale

The company that owns the Sleeman Brewery in Dartmouth is selling it.

Parent company Sapporo International says it’s moving more production to the United States. Sapporo says the Dartmouth facility makes less than two per cent of its annual volume and needs to improve its economies of scale.

“Please let me emphasize my appreciation for the hard work and contributions our employees have put into Sleeman at every level,” said Shige Yokoi, President and CEO, Sleeman Breweries Ltd. “I know this decision creates a lot of concern and anxiety among our 32 Dartmouth staff in particular. By actively advancing a sale now, we very much hope to secure the jobs and viability of this brewery. But in the long-term interests of our North American operations, we felt we needed to achieve some efficiencies of scale right away to stay competitive against our much larger continental and global rivals.”

Sleeman is already talking to buyers who might keep the facility as a brewery and save some of the 32 jobs, but if there’s no sale by July, it says the place will close.
