Most actively traded companies on the TSX, TSX Venture Exchange markets

TORONTO – Some of the most active companies traded Thursday on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange:

Toronto Stock Exchange (12,499.76 up 76.85 points):

Twin Butte Energy Ltd. (TSXV:TBE). Oil and gas. Down seven cents, or 2.36 per cent, at $2.90 on 21,993,513 shares. The Calgary-based company completed the acquisition of privately-held oil producer Waseca Energy for $136 million. Twin also said it’s hiking its monthly dividend by 6.7 per cent to 1.6 cents.

Barrick Gold Corp. (TSX:ABX). Gold miner. Down $3.83, or 9.48 per cent, at $36.56 on 8,704,063 shares. The big gold producer will rein in costs in the face of a soaring bill for its massive Pascua-Lama mine on the border between Chile and Argentina after posting weaker than expected third-quarter results.

Suncor Energy Inc. (TSX:SU). Energy. Up $1.16, or 3.46 per cent, at $34.68 on 8,026,217 shares. The Calgary-based company is reviewing three projects that are part of a $1.75-billion joint venture with French energy giant Total SA, in an effort to drive down costs. The country’s largest energy company posted a 28 per cent drop in its third-quarter profits.

Uranium One Inc. (TSX:UUU). Miner. Down 10 cents, or 4.61 per cent, at $2.07 on 7,347,488 shares. The miner, which has properties in the U.S., Kazakhstan, Australia and South Africa, will report its third-quarter results next week.

Research In Motion Ltd. (TSX:RIM). Wireless telecommunications. Up 80 cents, or 10.15 per cent, at $8.68 on 6,730,143 shares. The stock of the Waterloo, Ont.-based company jumped a day after it said its new BlackBerry smartphones are being tested by 50 phone carriers around the world. The testing process will ensure the devices are compatible with their systems.

Petaquilla Minerals Ltd. (TSX:PTQ). Miner. Down four cents, or 6.25 per cent, at 60 cents on 5,944,442 shares. British Columbia securities regulators have rejected a shareholder rights plan at Petaquilla that would help it fend off a hostile takeover offer from Inmet Mining Corp. (TSX:IMN) worth about $140 million. The regulator ordered a ban on any trading related to the plan effective after markets close Friday.

TSX Venture Exchange (1,321.29 up 6.81 points):

Pacific Coal Resources Ltd. (TSXV:PAK). Miner. Up two cents, or 14.81 per cent, at 15.5 cents on 12,933,750 shares.

ArPetrol Ltd. (TSXV:RPT). Oil and gas. Unchanged at a penny or 12,518,808 shares.

Companies reporting major news:

BCE Inc. (TSX:BCE). Media and telecommunications. Down 51 cents, or 1.17 per cent, at $43.15 on 2,119,756 shares. Canada’s biggest telecommunications company posted third-quarter profit of $569 million, down from $642 million while revenue rose slightly to $4.98 billion from $4.91 billion.

Cott Corp. (TSX:BCB). Beverage maker. Up 49 cents, or 6.42 per cent, at $8.12 on 221,406 shares. The world’s largest distributor of store-brand beverages set up a new quarterly dividend despite a 10 per cent decline in third-quarter profit and a four per cent drop in revenue.

Mega Brands Inc. (TSX:MB). Toy maker. Up two cents, or 0.21 per cent, at $9.75 on 29,632 shares. A double-digit growth in North American toy sales contributed to the jump in the toy maker’s third-quarter profit and revenue.
