Outrage brews within small business communities over proposed tax changes

HALIFAX – Outrage continues to brew within Canada’s small business community over proposed changes to federal tax codes that the community says will hurt their bottom lines.

The proposal, among other things, would stop the ability of a business owner from splitting income with family members at tax time, lowering the amount of tax they pay.

Darren Fisher, Liberal MP for Dartmouth-Cole Harbour, said there is still time for people to take part in the consultation process on the proposal.

He told the Rick Howe Show that he has heard from a number of people on the issue, and hopes to hear from more before this consultation period comes to an end October 3.

“Each time I meet with somebody else I hear something new that I send off to the office of finance,” he said. “I spoke with tax lawyers and tax accountants that have some really interesting thoughts on this and it’s all been very respectful.”

Fisher said finance minister Bill Morneau has told him that he would be making a stop in the Halifax area as part of this process, and to hear from people that will be impacted by these changes.

There isn’t a firm date yet, but he said it will be before the deadline for consultations.
