Man charged with uttering threats against two members of Dalhousie community

HALIFAX — Halifax Regional Police have charged a Halifax man with uttering threats against two people with connections to Dalhousie University.

30-year-old Stephen Gregory Tynes was arrested in Truro during of the evening of August 20. He appeared in court the next day to face two counts of uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm and one count of engaging in threatening conduct directed at the other person or any member of their family.

He was initially remanded but was released on conditions Wednesday by a Provincial Court Judge following a bail hearing.

In a release, Halifax Regional Police say at approximately 2:40 p.m. on August 20, they received information that a man had made threats against two Halifax residents with connections to a local university.

Police spokesperson Cst. Stacey Opalka would not confirm whether the threats were made against people connected to Dalhousie University, however, one of Tynes’ conditions states he is not allowed to be within 25 kilometres of the 5900 block of University Avenue, Halifax, N.S., which is the same block the Sir Charles Tupper Medical Building is located on the Dalhousie University campus.

Stephen Gregory Tynes was accused of “wilfully and without cause ” killing a cat in Truro on July 12, 2014.

Tynes was enrolled as a student at Dalhousie University’s Faculty of Medicine at the time of the incident and was reportedly expelled.

A trial was scheduled for December 11, 2014, however, the case was dismissed in September when the Crown stated they were not going offer any evidence against Tynes.

Stephen Gregory Tynes is currently under court orders to live in Truro with his father, have no direct or indirect contact or communication with the victims except through a lawyer and to not possess any weapons, drugs or alcohol.
