Dalhousie senate considers requesting external investigation

HALIFAX – Members of Dalhousie University’s senate argued last night that the process to discipline male dentistry students alleged to have posted sexually violent comments about female classmates should be shifted outside of the faculty.

A philosophy professor called for the senate to appoint members to probe whether the 13 men in the Facebook group had violated academic standards.

Letitia Meynell says the senate could appoint dentists from outside of the faculty.

Student senate member Jacqueline Skiptunis says she’ll support that motion.

She says a number of the women involved have lost confidence in the faculty’s handling of the issue.

The motion wasn’t voted on because the meeting ran out of time.

A member of the senate said he’ll bring forward a motion for a special senate meeting to discuss it further.

University president Richard Florizone says he welcomes the senate’s input, but he says a “just process” is underway.
