Local blogger wants easier access to McNabs Island

A local blogger has dubbed McNabs Island,Halifax Harbour’s hidden gem.  It feels like a world away from the hustle and bustle of city life, and is home to walking trails, historical sites.

Yet, the number of people who visit Point Pleasant Park in two weeks is greater than those that visit McNabs in the run of a year.

Blogger Sam Austin believes the city can bring more people to the island with the available resources.

“When it comes to the ferries, the city already has the boats and on the weekends, all but one are just docked,” Austin told News 95.7.  “Let’s put them to use, let’s have a weekend service, maybe a holiday service out there for four-months of the year during the peak summer season.”

But city councillor David Hendsbee said residents shouldn’t expect McNabs Island ferry service any time soon.

“With our present ferry fleet, I don’t think it’s possible because of the docking requirements,” said Hendsbee.  “The wharfs that are currently over there, I don’t think would be compatible to meet up with the loading requirements for our ferries.”

The island was a popular spot for Haligonians in the 1800s, and in order to restore the island back to its former glory, Austin said all three levels of government need work together.
