Explosion and fire engulfs multiple buildings in Stewiacke

Multiple fire crews have managed to contain a major fire and explosion in the downtown core of Stewiacke, Nova Scotia.

The Stewiacke Fire Department says they’ve been battling the blaze on George Street since 4:30 Saturday morning. Colchester County RCMP Cpl. Addie Maccallum says the fire broke out at at BJ Electric Motor and Control Ltd, an industrial building, and spread to other buildings and a home nearby.

“Part of the initial report was there was an explosion,” said Maccallum. “I imagine there’s combustibles on site. It’s unknown what the explosion was, but it was believed to be something that was contained inside the building.”

Maccallum says the RCMP has started its preliminary investigation.

“The main industrial property is heavily damaged and has affected multiple units,” added Maccallum.

There are no reports of injuries. George Street remains closed to traffic as fire and police investigate.
