Majority of workers asked to relocate say “No”

HALIFAX – More than 90 per cent of the Nova Scotia civil servants asked to relocate from Halifax to offices in smaller towns have rejected the government’s request.

In all, 71 unionized employees from three departments were asked to move as part of a government bid to spur economic activity in the hinterland.  However, only five civil servants have agreed to go.

The vast majority of those asked to move _ 57 _ have chosen to stay in Halifax, where they will be moved to other government departments, according to union rules.  Another nine employees have quit their jobs.

Premier Darrell Dexter says government services won’t be affected and new people will to hired to fill the positions in Digby, Truro, Shelburne and New Waterford.
