Stratford festival says it has contingency plan in event of strike

STRATFORD, Ont. – The Stratford Shakespeare Festival says contingency plans are in place in the event of a strike by call centre staff.

Officials say there has never been a strike at the theatre festival in Stratford, Ont., in its 59-year history and they are hoping there will be a negotiated settlement with the union representing the 53 employees.

The festival says major issues are wages and contracting out.

The centre handles ticket sales and the festival is advising that patrons buy tickets online, although phone lines would remain open during a strike.

Call-centre staff have been in a legal strike position since 12:01 a.m. on Friday.

The festival’s 2012 season opens officially on Monday with a performance of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing.
