Budget leaves NSCC facing multi-million dollar deficit

The Dexter government’s latest budget has left the Nova Scotia Community College looking for ways to make up for quite a large financial shortfall.

The Dexter government has frozen NSCC’s operating budget at $200 million, and vice-president of advancement Michelle Lane says that means the college will face a deficit of more than $5 million this fiscal year.

“It’s been confirmed that our base operating budget is essentially the same as last year,” she said. “However, we will need to cover the cost of wage increases and other inflationary pressures.”

Lane says the administration has launched a review and all options are on the table.

“Five point seven million dollars is a shortfall that is going to require us to take a serious look at our operations and determine how we can close that gap,” Lane said. “What’s important is finding that money while having the least impact on student learning, which is really the core of our business, and doing so with the least impact on our employees.”

Lane says the school hasn’t ruled out the idea of layoffs or a tuition hike. She says it will take several weeks to come up with a revised plan.
