Mike Evans named Rainmen head coach

The Halifax Rainmen made a big splash Wednesday when they introduced Mike Evans as the teams new head coach.

Evans comes with a long resume of basketball experience.

He played at Kansas State University, where he remains the all-time leading points scorer with 2,115 points.

He was drafted 21st overall in the 1978 NBA draft by the Denver Nuggets and spent the next nine years playing for the Nuggets, the San Antonio Spurs, the Milwaukee Bucks and the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was regarded as one of the best 3-point shooters in league.

After he retired, Evans joined the Denver Nuggets’ coaching staff and later took on the role of head coach after the firing of Dan Issel.

In 2006, Evans joined the Toronto Raptors where he worked as a scout, and was later promoted to the role of assistant coach.

He says the passionate sports fans in Halifax were a big deciding factor in his decision to come to the city.

“This is a province, and a city that really enjoys its sports,” said Evans. “You come out and support it with such passion and vigor.”

He says accountability on and off the court will paramount for players and coaches. He also told the players he plans to bring an NBA atmosphere to the daily operations of the team.

Evans will coach the team for the remainder of the 2010-2011 season. Both team owner Andre Levingston and Evans say they’ll re-evaluate the situation at the end of the season.

Evans will debut as head coach of the Rainmen when they take on the Saint John Mill Rats this Saturday.
