Nova Scotia Premier Darrell Dexter says the NDP government is controlling expenses. He was delivering a state-of-the-province address to the local business community today. He says the recent deal with Newfoundland to build a sub-sea cable to bring power to our province from Muskrat Falls in Labrador is a major achievement.
But, Dexter also admits Nova Scotia is at a ‘turning point’, facing a deficit and the need to cut costs for public services.
He says he plans to work on a regional venture capital fund at this weekend’s Atlantic premiers conference.
“The whole question, for example, of a venture capital fund that could be administered across the region is one I’d like to see them adopt,” he says.
Liberal Opposition Leader Stephen McNeil says Dexter isn’t facing up to recent job losses over the past week, including a sawmill in New Glasgow, brewers with Labatt in Halifax and managerial staff with Bell Aliant. McNeil says the government also needs to be addressing the province’s high tax rates.
