Volunteers to clean up on McNabs Island

Everything from old car tires and coffee cups to syringes and Styrofoam will be collected off McNabs Island tomorrow.

The Friends of McNabs Island Society is holding its annual clean up – which is expected to bring nearly 100 volunteers to the park.

Friends of McNabs member Carolyn Mont says they’ll collect thousands of pieces of trash for the island’s shores.

“They do get covered in flotsam and jetsam,” she said. “It’s unsightly and if volunteers don’t do it, it won’t get done.”

Mont explains it’s rare for people to visit the park and leave trash behind.

She says most of the trash found on the island has been thrown away in other parts of HRM and has been brought in by the tide.

“We always ask people to tell us what the strangest thing is that they’ve found,” she said. “We found some things that were a little peculiar at times. One was a piece of folk art on a piece of wood, but we only had half of it.”

The free event runs from 10 until 4 on Sunday.

Volunteers are asked to meet the ferry at Murphy’s on the Water at 9:30.
