Future of N.S. lighthouses uncertain after Ottawa gives up maintenance

The federal government is getting  out of the lighthouse business and that means some problems for the many lighthouses here in Nova Scotia.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans has declared about 1,000 lighthouses across the country – including 138 in Nova Scotia – as surplus.

That means the cost of running them will be left to their home communities, individiuals or non-profit organizations.

Nova Scotia Lighthouse Preservation Society president Barry MacDonald tells the Herald Ottawa’s decision is a slap in the face. He says his group has fought for 10 years to have the feds maintain at least the most iconic lighthouses.

The lighthouses affected include those at Peggy’s Cove, Georges Island and Chebucto Head.
