CRA issues clear warning about consequences of missing tax deadline

The Canada Revenue Agency has issued a not-so-subtle reminder that taxes are due by midnight on Friday.

They’ve also released some information about the consequences for those who fail to file on time.

The agency notes in a release that 19 Atlantic Canadians, including four Nova Scotians, were convicted of failing to file on time last year. They got a combined total of 11 months in jail, 12 months house arrest, and nearly $100,000 in fines.

In 2009, the CRA’s compliance officers also tapped 4,080 Atlantic Canadians for 8,127 missing returns. The additional taxes, penalties, and interest from those returns totalled more than $87 million.

The deadline for filing 2010 tax returns is midnight on Friday.
