By The Canadian Press

OTTAWA – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has confirmed one Canadian was killed and four others were hurt Thursday when a van plowed into crowds of tourists on a popular street in Barcelona.

Trudeau is offering his condolences to the family members and friends of those injured.

He calls the loss of innocent people “senseless” and calls on people around the world to stand firm against the spread of hate and intolerance.

Trudeau says efforts to divide people will only “strengthen our resolve.”

No other information about the Canadians who were hurt was released. Canadian officials say they are in touch with the affected families.

In total, 13 people were killed in Barcelona and another in a separate attack in the nearby resort town of Cambrils. As many as 100 were injured.
