Earthquake in China kills more than 100, leaves thousands injured

A large earthquake in southwest China has left at least 150 people dead, with at least 2,000 more injured.

The 6.6-magnitude earthquake rocked China’s Sichuan Province.

This area is no stranger to deadly earthquakes, after a powerful 7.9-magnitude quake in 2008 killed an estimated 69,000 people.

U.S. Geological Survey spokesperson Yana Pursley says there have been several large aftershocks in the region.

“They have between magnitude 4.5, up to magnitude 5,” Pursley said of the aftershocks.

The shallow earthquake struck just after 8:00 a.m. local time at a depth of 12-kilometres.
