Shopping Centre, Central Library to re-open after power outage shutters both

HALIFAX – The Halifax Shopping Centre and Halifax Central Library are both expected to re-open Monday after a power outage that had thousands in the dark forced both to close their doors early on Sunday afternoon.

Roughly 4,000 Nova Scotia Power customers in the Halifax-area were in the dark at the peak of the outage that was centred in downtown Halifax, with pockets affected in western parts of the peninsula, Lower Sackville and Fall River to Enfield.

The outages started just after noon and caused both the library and mall to shut their doors temporarily before closing for good shortly after.

The power outages also knocked out traffic lights in a number of areas, including around the mall, which caused headaches on Bayers Road, Mumford Road, Romans Avenue and Joseph Howe Drive.

Regional Police were also forced to shut down a section of Young Street for a short time as crews dealt with downed power lines and Halifax Regional Municipality said 311 received over a dozen similar calls Sunday.

The power came back on for most just after 6 p.m. Sunday and it’s not known if the wind is to blame for the outages, as Nova Scotia Power said the cause remained under investigation.

While the Municipality dealt with gusty winds on Sunday, it was rain on Saturday, as Environment Canada reported the 69 millimetres fell in a short time Saturday afternoon which caused significant flooding throughout the area.

Crews worked to clear storm drains and catch basins but road closures because of floods were reported on Robie Street at Welsford Street and the Bedford Highway near Mount Saint Vincent University.

Pleasant Street at Mount Hope Avenue, Barrington Street and Inglis Street were also closed at one point Saturday because of flooding.

A downed tree on Scott Street Saturday evening also prompted the street to be closed near Desmond Avenue for a short time to allow it to be cleared away by municipal crews.

Halifax Regional Municipality asks that residents report any downed branches or debris on roads or sidewalks to 311, with crews being dispatched on a priority basis.
