NS Government moves to help expand provincial vinyards

NEWPORT LANDING, N.S. – Nova Scotia wineries are being encouraged to grow more grapes.

The government says it will spend up to one million dollars to help expand vineyards in the province, and growers are being invited to apply for funding.

Premier Stephen McNeil jointly announced to move with Agriculture Minister Keith Colwell and members of the Nova Scotia Wine Development Board Tuesday at Avondale Sky Winery in Newport Landing.

Premier McNeil says the value of the wine industry will increase as more grapes are available, adding that will help rural communities secure jobs and create economic spinoffs.

Nova Scotia’s wineries produce about 1.8 million litres of wine annually, with sales topping 15 million dollars in 2014.
