Investigation underway in to clearing of trees in Long Lake Provincial Park

HALIFAX – Environment Minister Randy Delorey said Thursday an investigation had begun in to what happened to more than a dozen hectares of trees that have been reportedly cleared from Long Lake Provincial Park.

The stretch of trees runs along Old Sambro Road near the park, which is supposed to be protected from such clearing.

Delorey said it’s not clear at this point what has taken place, but said conservation officers had begun to look in to the matter and the investigation remains in the early stages.

“They’re out performing an investigation now so we won’t know any of the details until that’s complete,” Delorey said.

He said surveying needs to be done as part of the investigation, but confirmed it is illegal to cut trees in a provincial park.

The penalties could range from warning to fines if a violation were found, according to Delorey.
