Halifax switching street lights to LED

Halifax Regional Council has voted to make the switch to more energy efficient LED street lights.

Tuesday’s vote was unanimous.

But Peninsula South – Downtown Coun. Waye Mason says business associations and store owners have raised concerns about the white-blue color of the lights.

“One thing I”m going to be talking to staff about outside of council is can we get in the shopping areas, one of those slightly more expensive but warmer LED lights that makes people feel a little less threatened or on edge,” said Mason.

He says bringing shoppers to the downtown core is a prioirty and they don’t want people to be uncomfortable with the lighting.

All municipalities in the province are required to change all street lights to LED by 2022, as a result of the province adding street lights to their list of energy inefficient appliances in 2011.
