HMCS Toronto crew to run own Bluenose Marathon in Bahrain

The crew of HMCS Toronto will host their own version of the Bluenose Marathon this weekend while they continue Operation Artemis, patrolling the international waters of the Middle East.

The run will take place while the frigate is in port in Bahrain.

Master Seaman Willert, the crew member organizing the race, says much of the crew participates in the marathon in Halifax each year.

“We realize the importance that it’s the 10th anniversary and it just so happens that the planets aligned and we were able to get into port and conduct the race,” said Willert.

He added as well as training for the race, they’ve been raising money for the Military Family Resource Centre in Halifax.

Bluenose Marathon co-chair Gerry Walsh said marathon organizers are pleased to see the crew members participating, even while they’re at sea.

“The military plays a big role in Halifax and we’re really grateful that individuals are supporting the Bluenose that way and improving their own health and wellness,” said Walsh.

The marathon has sent over a box of t-shirts and finisher medals for each participant, just as they’d recieve if they were running here.

HMCS Toronto has been deployed on counter-terrorism operations in the Indian Ocean for about four months.
