Rowers break 114-year-old Atlantic record from New York to UK by 11 days

The Associated Press Jul 31, 2010 13:31:15 PM

LONDON - A four-man rowing team has broken the 114-year-old record for crossing the Atlantic from New York to Britain by 11 days.

Skippered by Scotland's Leven Brown, the team left on June 17 and rowed 5,249 kilometres to the Isles of Scilly off England's southwest tip in 43 days 21 hours 26 minutes 48 seconds.

The previous record of 55 days 13 hours was set in 1896 by two Norwegians.

The crew that arrived on Saturday also set the record for the most ocean miles rowed in 24 hours: 118 miles (190 kilometres) on July 14.

"Every bit of technology that we had seemed to break," Brown said. "In the end it came down to four men and four oars."
