Thaddeus Young scores career-high 32 points as 76ers beat Raptors 114-101

THE CANADIAN PRESS Mar 08, 2010 02:26:20 AM

Even the return of all-star Chris Bosh couldn't help the Toronto Raptors on Sunday afternoon.

Thaddeus Young scored a career-high 32 points, Jrue Holiday had 21 and the Philadelphia 76ers beat the Raptors 114-101 to snap a five-game losing streak.

"Today was just a great day," Young said. "My teammates were looking for me and they put me in different positions."

Bosh returned from a seven-game absence to finish with 12 points and 12 rebounds, but the Raptors still lost for the fifth time in six games.

"They were more focused than we were," Bosh said.

Raptors coach Jay Triano was more blunt.

"We weren't very good," Triano said.

Bosh was back after being sidelined for six games with a sprained left ankle and missing Friday's win over New York with a severe stomach virus that forced him to spend several hours in a hospital. He was briefly knocked out of this one after falling early in the fourth but returned to the court after getting his ankle re-taped.

"I felt pretty good," Bosh said. "It's going to take some time. I've still got to get my legs under me. Once I get my legs and my strength back, I think I'll be fine."

Elsewhere in the NBA it was: Orlando 96 L.A. Lakers 94; Boston 86 Washington 83; Detroit 110 Houston 107 (OT); Oklahoma City 108 Sacramento 102; and Denver 118 Portland 106.

At Toronto, the Raptors find themselves struggling to hold on to a playoff spot as they depart for a four-game West Coast trip.

"We've got to do a better job of getting our minds ready for the games," guard Antoine Wright said. "I don't know what it's going to take but something has to happen right now because we can't afford to lose games like this.

"There's not that much margin for error right now," Wright added. "You lose a game like this, you can go from fifth to seventh or even eighth. You don't want to be fighting to get back in the hunt. We've got to figure some things out."

Andre Iguodala had 16 points and matched a season-high with 10 assists, Elton Brand had 12 points and nine rebounds and Louis Williams scored 12 for Philadelphia.

The 76ers went 9-for-12 from three-point range, including three by Young.

"Thad made his threes and I felt that jump-started us," 76ers coach Eddie Jordan said.

Jarrett Jack had 20 points and nine assists for Toronto.

Iguodala gave a meaningful look at the Raptors bench after his fadeaway jumper in the fourth quarter put the 76ers up nine points, 96-87.

"Guys were talking trash behind me as I was going up," Iguodala said. "(Former 76ers forward Reggie Evans) is one of those guys that talks a lot of trash. He was beating us up a little bit when he was in the game so I had to try and get him back somehow."

Jose Calderon made a three-pointer to get Toronto within six, but Williams answered with a layup. Holiday then made a three-pointer from the corner and converted a driving layup to increase Philadelphia's lead to 107-94 with 2:33 left.

Young started in place of Samuel Dalembert, who began the game on the sideline after arriving late to a team meeting before the tip. Dalembert had started every game this season.

"It was pretty early but that's OK, everybody else showed up," Jordan said.

Sonny Weems, who scored a career-high 20 points Friday, started for Toronto with Hedo Turkoglu sidelined by an injured left ankle. Weems finished with 10 points against the 76ers.

Philadelphia's Marreese Speights had to be helped to the locker room after spraining his right knee in the second quarter. Speights was driving to the basket when he stepped on Bosh's foot, then fell over and lay on the court clutching his knee. X-rays were negative but Speights did not return.

The 76ers closed the second quarter with a 7-0 run to take a 55-47 lead into halftime.

Magic 96 Lakers 94

At Orlando, Fla., Vince Carter had 25 points and Dwight Howard finished with 15 points and 16 rebounds as the Magic beat the Lakers to hand Los Angeles its first three-game losing streak of the Pau Gasol-Kobe Bryant Era.

Carter made his first 13 free throws and kept the Magic in control, showing signs of why Orlando made the move for the eight-time all-star after losing to the Lakers in last year's finals.

Celtics 86 Wizards 83

At Boston, Ray Allen scored a game-high 25 points, including a go-ahead three-pointer with 17.1 seconds remaining, and Boston rallied past Washington.

Boston trailed 79-66 with 6:11 remaining and responded with a 20-4 run to close out the game with eight points from Allen and six from guard Rajon Rondo.

The Celtics cut the deficit to 79-76 before JaVale McGee dunked in a Randy Foye miss for Washington with 2:38 left, but the Celtics scored six more capped by an Allen three-pointer for an 82-81 Boston lead with 1:33 remaining.

Pistons 110 Rockets 107 (OT)

At Auburn Hills, Mich., Tayshaun Prince scored a season-high 29 points to help Detroit snap a six-game losing streak.

Richard Hamilton added 22 points for Detroit, while Kevin Martin had 27 points for Houston and Aaron Brooks scored 25. Martin and Brooks, though, both missed key three-point attempts in the last 10 seconds of overtime.

Rodney Stuckey did not play, two days after collapsing on the bench during Detroit's loss in Cleveland. Pistons coach John Kuester said Stuckey was still undergoing tests and the team expected to know more about his status within 48 hours.

Thunder 108 Kings 102

At Sacramento, Calif., Kevin Durant had 27 points and eight rebounds and Oklahoma City beat the Kings.

The road victory was the seventh in nine games for the Thunder, who are 3-1 against the Kings this season.

Tyreke Evans had 24 points and seven assists for the Kings and Carl Landry had 20 points and eight rebounds. Francisco Garcia scored 14 points and Jason Thompson added 11.

The Kings have lost two straight and three of four in falling to 15-15 this season at home.

Nuggets 118 Trail Blazers 106

At Denver, Carmelo Anthony scored 30 points - his third consecutive game with at least 30 points - and the Nuggets beat Portland for their third straight victory.

J.R. Smith added 22 points, Chauncey Billups had 21 points and Nene 14 for the Nuggets, who improved to 28-5 at the Pepsi Center, the third-best home record in the NBA behind Cleveland and the Los Angeles Lakers.

Jerryd Bayless' 24 points led the Trail Blazers, who saw their three-game winning streak snapped.
