South Dakota State Jackrabbits third baseman Jesse Sawyer led all vote-getters in balloting for the all-Canadian college baseball team, earning player of the year honours from CanadianBaseballNetwork.com.
The Calgary native collected 33 first-place votes and was named on 43 of 49 ballots in the 10th annual poll honouring the best of the 711 Canadians playing college ball in the United States.
Sawyer hit .346 with 19 homers and 58 RBIs in 56 games for South Dakota and in one stretch homered in 11 of 13 games.
The runner-up in voting was LSU-Shreveport first baseman Brent Lavallee of North Delta, B.C. Kentucky Wildcats lefty James Paxton, who was selected 37th overall by the Toronto Blue Jays, also earned a spot on the first team.
The rest of the infield includes second baseman Kevin Mailloux of Windsor, Ont., of the Canisius College Griffs and Vancouver shortstop David Narodowski of the Kansas Jayhawks.
The all-Canadian right-hander is Ottawa's Matt McGovern of the North Carolina-Pembroke Braves; while Luis Castillo of Burlington, Ont. from the Bellevue Bruins and Shawn Hetherington of Tsawassen, B.C. of the British Columbia Thunderbirds shared the closer's role.
The rest of the first team includes catcher Marc-Olivier Mimeault-Jodoin of Candiac, Que., from the Georgia State Panthers; outfielders Anthony Cros, a Kelowna, B.C., resident on the Northwestern Oklahoma State Rangers, Guelph's Josh Garton of the Volunteer State Pioneers and Montreal's Jon Prevost of the University of Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks.
The DH is Doug Toro from Longueuil, Que. of the Lynn Fighting Knights.
