Mooseheads debut new coach and players as the 2016/17 season starts

By Chris Halef

The first puck drop of the Mooseheads’ regular season goes down tonight when the Herd take on the Moncton Wildcats on the road.

The team is fresh off an active off-season, which included the acquisition of two top draft picks, a Swiss import, and a new head coach.

This year’s roster consists of eight rookies including the number 1 and 2 overall picks in the Q-draft, Benoit-Olivier Groulx and Jared MacIsaac.

Swiss import Nico Hischier also rounds out the squad, with 20-year old Bradley Kennedy making his Herd debut after being traded from the Charlottetown Islanders in June.

Tonight officially launches the Andre Tourigny-era of the Mooseheads, he told NEWS 95.7 his team may be young, but they’re very talented.

“We want to be the hardest working team and strive for excellence every day, and so far the guys are doing it,” he said.

Tourigny said the team is already bonding in the locker room and on the ice.

“The whole group is pretty much the same age, we have 12 players 17-and-under,” he said. “The chemistry is already pretty good, you can hear a lot of laughing in the the room and they work really hard together every day at the practices.”

After a disappointing campaign last season, Tourigny says the Herd is looking rebuild.

“We want to move the puck quick, we want to be quick in transition, we want a team where our fans will be excited by the way we play.”

The Moose return the Scotiabank Centre for their home opener Saturday night against the Saint John Sea Dogs.
