Penguins hire Dartmouth native Mike Johnston as new head coach to replace Dan Bylsma

PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Penguins are turning to former NHL assistant Mike Johnston as the team’s new head coach.

The Penguins introduced Johnston at a press conference Wednesday. He replaces Dan Bylsma, who was fired on June 6.

Johnston spent the past six years with the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League. He previously served as an associate head coach with the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings and Vancouver Canucks.

Johnston leaves the WHL with a coaching record of 224-116-11-10.

The Dartmouth, N.S., native has also held various coaching positions with Hockey Canada.

The Penguins also announced that former Pittsburgh forward Rick Tocchet has been hired as an assistant coach.
