News1130 Sports weekend round-up

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – There’s plenty of action for the local sports fan this weekend.

NHL

The Vancouver Canucks will try to build on last night’s win over the Nashville Predators when they host the Minnesota Wild in a rare afternoon matinee (1 p.m.) tomorrow. The Canucks have won their last three meetings, outscoring the Wild 13-3. The Wild are coming off of a 2-1 shootout win at Edmonton last night but have lost two of their last three games.

It will be the Canucks’ first look at Dany Heatley and Devin Setoguchi, the two newest star members of the Wild.

Winger Mikael Samuelsson missed today’s practice and could miss a second straight game with stiffness because of offseason sports hernia surgery.  After tomorrow’s game, the Canucks don’t play until a Tuesday road game in Edmonton.

WHL

The Vancouver Giants will try to snap a three-game Western Hockey League losing streak tonight when they play host to the Victoria Royals. The Giants (4-6-0-1) are three points behind the new Royals (6-5-0-0) in the BC Divison but have taken two of the three meetings between the two teams so far this season.

Puck drop is 7:30 p.m.

AHL

The Abbotsford Heat host the Milwaukee Admirals tonight and tomorrow in American Hockey League action at the Abbotsford Sports and Entertainment Centre. The Heat are 3-1 after splitting a pair of games with the Rockford IceHogs last weekend. The Admirals, the farm team of the Nashville Predators have yet to lose in three starts.

Both games are 7 p.m. starts.

CFL

It is another crucial weekend for the BC Lions as they travel to Hamilton to play the Tiger-Cats tomorrow afternoon (4 p.m.) with a chance to at least clinch a home playoff game this fall. A Lions (9-6) win and a Calgary Stampeders loss to Saskatchewan tonight would mean at least a West semi-final at BC Place for the Lions. The Tigercats (7-8) sit third in the Eastern Conference, four points behind second place Winnipeg.

UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL

The UBC Thunderbirds (4-2) travel to Edmonton to play the University of Alberta Golden Bears tomorrow. The Thunderbirds beat the Bears on September 17th by a score of 40-30. The ninth-place Thunderbirds clinched a Canada West playoff spot last week beating the  Regina Rams by a score of 23-16.

In GNAC action, the Simon Fraser University Clansmen will try to extend their NCAA win streak to three games when they visit the University of Southern Oregon in Ashland, Oregon Saturday at 2 p.m.

MLS

It’s the final game of the Vancouver Whitecaps‘ first season in Major League Soccer when they welcome the Colorado Rapids to BC Place. Vancouver (6W-17L-10D) hosts a Rapids side (11W-9L-13D) that’s preparing to defend their MLS Cup title after securing one of four wild card spots in this year’s MLS postseason.

Game time tomorrow is 4 p.m.
