Little League Canada investigating brawl after semi-final

SAINT JOHN, N.B.  – At least one person had to be taken to hospital after a brawl broke out following a semi-final game at the Senior Little League Baseball championships.

Police and EMS responded to Memorial Field around 1 p.m. Thursday, just as the game between Saint John and Edmonton wrapped up.

Witnesses say the conflict involved players from Saint John and Valleyfield, Quebec.

Witnesses say players from Quebec were heckling the Saint John All-Stars from the stands during the game.

But Quebec coach Alain Fauteux says his players were just watching the game in the bleachers.

“Some players from Saint John, (went) in the bleachers and begin to fight with the (players) from Nova Scotia, Ontario and Quebec,” he said.

League president Roy Bergerman says it doesn’t matter who started it – team officials should have ended it.

“We have a code of conduct and decorum that we expect them to adhere to and embrace,” he said. “It’s disappointing when you see things like this happen.”

A woman in her 70s was taken to hospital, but she was not believed to be seriously hurt.

Saint John City police Sgt. Pat Bonner said no charges are expected unless someone comes forward with a complaint. Both Bonner and Fauteux say the feud was brewing for a while.
