Parents group meeting to reiterate support for teachers

HALIFAX – The group Nova Scotia Parents for Teachers will be meeting this weekend to reiterate its support for the province’s teachers, as a potential strike deadline inches closer.
Spokesperson Kate Ervine tells NEWS 95.7, parents who want to address the conditions of education can come to the forum and discuss that face-to-face.
She adds they have a number of speakers lined up to discuss the role of education in the province. “We’re going to have the president of the Nova Scotia Teachers’ Union come to provide us with information in terms of what’s happening from their perspective. We’re also going to have a teacher who is going to talk about what teachers are thinking, and we have a student coming to talk about why students are teachers.”
Ervine says there is genuine concern about building a prosperous future for our children. “We want them to stay, not leave and go elsewhere,” she says. “Education is part of that foundation.”
The meeting is being held Sunday at 1 p.m. in room 255 of the Sobey Building at Saint Mary’s University. The meeting is open to the public.
Teachers in the province will be in a legal strike position on Dec. 3 and could be on the picket line as early as Dec. 5.
